We know you've seen it. A necklace that looks almost identical to our Elina or our Long Chain Bar — for $4.99 on Alibaba or AliExpress. We're not going to pretend that doesn't exist. We're going to tell you exactly what you're actually buying when you go that route.
This isn't a defensive post. We're not here to trash other sellers or guilt you into buying from us. You're an adult who can make your own call. What we want is for you to make it with full information — because most sellers won't give you that.
We will.
The Jewelry Design Problem Nobody Talks About
Here's a reality of the jewelry industry: jewelry designs are not uniquely protectable the way logos or artwork are. A snake chain choker, a Y-shaped lariat, a double-loop bracelet — these silhouettes exist across hundreds of manufacturers. When you source a design from a factory in Yiwu or Guangzhou, that same factory is selling the same mold to 200 other brands, wholesale merchants, and resellers simultaneously.
We know this because we source materials and stay close to the supply chain. The same base design that becomes our
Aliya double-layer necklace or our Cherry Blossoms Flower Necklace is technically available as a raw component to anyone willing to place a minimum order. The design isn't what separates us.

What separates us is everything that happens before the piece reaches your skin — and everything it has to survive once it does. |
Let's Talk About What "Cheap" Actually Means
When a piece of jewelry is listed for $3–$6 on Alibaba, the math is simple. At that price point, after factory margin, shipping logistics, and platform fees, the actual material cost for that piece is under $1. Here's what that buys:
The Base Metal: Where Everything Starts
Cheap jewelry typically uses zinc alloy, low-grade brass, or iron as the base metal. These metals:
- Corrode on contact with water, sweat, and skin oils
- Leach nickel — a common allergen that causes rashes, redness, and irritation
- Turn green or black within weeks of regular wear
- Feel light and hollow because the walls are thin
At Pristti, every piece is built on
316L stainless steel — the same grade used in surgical implants and medical devices. It is inherently corrosion-resistant, nickel-free, and designed for long-term skin contact. This choice alone costs more. We make it deliberately.
The Plating: Microns Matter More Than You Think
Gold plating is measured in microns — fractions of a millimeter. Standard cheap electroplating applies 0.01 to 0.05 microns of gold. That's not a meaningful layer. It wears off in weeks under friction, sweat, and washing.
Pristti uses
18K PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) plating at 0.3+ microns — roughly 6 to 30 times thicker than standard electroplate. PVD bonding doesn't just sit on top of the metal; it fuses to it under vacuum pressure and heat. The result is a finish that holds through daily wear, water, and friction for years, not weeks.
|
⚠ What "18K gold plated" means on Alibaba vs Pristti Any seller can write "18K gold plated" on a listing. It refers to the color of the gold (warm yellow tone), not the quality or thickness of the plating. Always ask for the base metal and plating process — most sellers won't answer. We always will. |

What You Actually Feel in Your Hand
We'll be specific, because specs only go so far.
Pick up our
Gold Plated Matte Bangle and compare it to a $5 version of the same silhouette. The weight difference is immediate and unmistakable. Brass is denser than zinc alloy — the piece has substance. When you set it on a table it doesn't rattle. When you put it on your wrist it settles with intention.
Look at the edges on our
Snake Chain Choker versus a bulk-manufactured version. Our links are individually uniform in shape and finish. Cheap chain has irregular link sizes, visible seam lines, and rough edges that catch on fabric and skin.
Wear our
Tiny Heart Necklace for three days straight — shower, gym, sleep. The finish doesn't change. The clasp doesn't loosen. The chain doesn't kink. We know because we test this before anything goes live on the site.
|
We are a small operation. We see every piece before it reaches a customer. That is not a liability — it is the entire point. |
The Skin Question
This one matters more than people admit. Cheap alloy metals — specifically nickel, cobalt, and lead — are classified skin allergens. The EU has strict regulations limiting nickel content in jewelry worn against skin. The US has softer standards. Most Alibaba sellers are not testing for these.
We are not stating this to alarm you. We are stating it because it's true, and we believe you should know what's going on your body.
Every Pristti piece —
Water Drop Charm Choker, the Sara Palm Bracelet, the Chunky Geometric Rings — is built on a 316L stainless steel base that is 100% nickel-free and hypoallergenic by material, not by marketing claim.
If you have sensitive ears, you know how rare it is to find earrings that don't cause irritation within hours. Our Gold Hollow Earring and stud designs are worn daily by customers who've spent years avoiding earrings entirely. That's the standard we design to.
What We Don't Do That Cheap Sellers Do
We think it's worth being plain about this:
- We don't batch-ship blind. We don't purchase 500 units of a design and drop-ship them without inspecting each one.
- We don't use deceptive listing language. "18K gold plated" on our site means PVD-bonded 18K gold over surgical steel, not gold-colored coating over unknown alloy.
- We don't hide the base metal. If you ask us what any piece is made of, we will tell you exactly what it is.
- We don't price for impulse. Our prices reflect real material costs, real quality control, and a real person who stands behind the product.
- We don't sell pieces we wouldn't wear ourselves. This sounds like marketing. It isn't. We are a solopreneur operation in Los Angeles. The founder wears this jewelry. Her friends wear this jewelry. That feedback loop is direct.
So Why Do We Sell Designs That Exist Elsewhere?
Because a snake chain is a snake chain. A lariat is a lariat. A simple gold bangle has existed for 5,000 years. We are not claiming to have invented these forms — and anyone who does is lying to you.
What we are claiming is that our version of these classics is made correctly, with the right materials, by a business that has staked its reputation on quality rather than volume.
The Elina twisted flat snake necklace exists as a design on a hundred Alibaba Express pages. Our Elina is the version you can swim in, sleep in, and still be wearing six months from now.
The Amba channel-set stainless steel bracelet has parallels in dozens of factories. Our Amba is the one that won't leave a green ring on your wrist.
|
The design is the starting point. The material, the process, and the person behind it are the product. |
When Buying Cheaper Actually Makes Sense
We'll say something you don't hear from most jewelry brands: sometimes the $5 version is the right call.
If you need a piece for one event and you'll never wear it again — buy the cheap version. We mean it. Don't spend more than you need to on something that will live in a drawer after Saturday.
If you're testing a style to see if you even like it on your body — yes, try the low-stakes version first.
But if you want something to wear daily, something that has to survive real life on your skin, something you're going to reach for every morning — that's when the material difference stops being abstract and starts showing up in the mirror.
That's the customer we design for. And that's who we'll always design for.
